Study Engineering Science with a focus on Civil, Electrical, Earth System Science & Environmental, or Mechanical Engineering.
The Engineering Science programs are housed within the Mathematics, Engineering and Computer Science (MEC) Department and offers four degrees: Civil, Electrical, Earth System Science & Environmental, and Mechanical Engineering. Each leads to an Associate in Science (AS) degree, and has been designed for transfer as a Dual/ Joint program with the School of Engineering at City College of New York (CCNY).
After completing the AS degree at LaGuardia, students will transfer to City College of New York (CCNY) or another senior college in order to obtain the Bachelor in Science degree in Engineering. The AS program offers a seamless transition to the upper division of the baccalaureate program at CCNY provided the student satisfies transfer requirements. The bachelor’s degree from CCNY is fully accredited by New York State and by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET).Programmatic goals are to provide students with a solid background in the core curriculum of engineering during the first two years, and to prepare them to pursue baccalaureate degrees in engineering in subsequent years. Transferring students are expected to perform as well as (or better than) students matriculating directly at CCNY. The program officially started in the fall of 2005; since then articulation agreements with SUNY at Stony Brook, NYC Tech, and Vaughn College have been established in order to offer students more transfer opportunities.
An Associate degree in Engineering Science is the first step to a Bachelor degree and subsequent career in engineering.
Civil Engineers design, construct, supervise,
operate, and maintain large construction projects and systems, including roads,
buildings, airports, tunnels, dams, bridges, and systems for water supply and
sewage treatment. In 2015, the annual median salary for civil engineers was $82,220.
Electrical Engineers design, develop, test, and supervise the manufacturing
of electrical equipment, such as electric motors, radar and navigation systems,
communications systems, and power generation equipment. According to the Bureau
of Labor Statistics, the median annual salary for electrical engineers in 2015 was
Environmental Engineers use the principles of engineering, soil
science, biology, and chemistry to develop solutions to environmental problems.
They are involved in efforts to improve recycling, waste disposal, public
health, and water and air pollution control. In 2015 the average annual salary
Mechanical Engineers design, develop, build, and test mechanical
and thermal devices, including tools, engines, and machines. According to the
Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median annual salary for electrical engineers
in 2015 was $83,590.
