New LaGuardia Students from Long Island City High School Recruited as Elmezzi Career Fellows

Students in pilot receive high-touch guidance and internship opportunities, modeled after CUNY Service Corps

January 14, 2021

LaGuardia Community College and the Thomas and Jeanne Elmezzi Private Foundation have partnered together to create the Elmezzi Career Fellows program.

The program is modeled after CUNY’s successful Service Corps program, which has placed over 4,300 students in paid internships across the five boroughs over the past seven years.

The Elmezzi Career Fellows program aims to prepare students for internship experiences through workshops, online-trainings, and mentorships. Students are then placed through a matching system that pairs employer needs with capable students with aligned interests. After completion of their academic year internship, a place will be reserved for successful Elmezzi Career Fellows in a Summer Corps program.

“The transition from high school to college can be overwhelming, especially for first-generation college students. This partnership with the Elmezzi Foundation to guide a cohort of students graduating from Long Island City High School and enrolling at LaGuardia will make their attending college an easier and more successful one,” said LaGuardia Community College President Kenneth Adams. “With the invaluable support of the Elmezzi Foundation students are also placed in paid internships, providing opportunities for students to receive work experience that is more important than ever as we rebuild the New York City economy.”

A pilot cohort of 20 students began in October 2020 and represent young adults of color from diverse backgrounds.
