Academic Year Program Overview
During the academic year component, our students attend Saturday sessions in Mathematics, critical reading, and writing, as well as individual and small group tutoring in specific subject areas. Our staff works closely with the juniors in our program to prepare them for the SAT. Regents review sessions are offered for students taking the exams. In addition to Saturday sessions, students are provided with the opportunity to attend weekly tutoring, and attend various activities and trips that are programmed throughout the year. Such activities include college campus visits, museum visits, and movie outings.
The Upward Bound Program works very closely with seniors assisting them with their college applications. For example, we have invited past Upward Bound students, who are now in college, to speak to our current high school seniors about their college application process. By doing this, we have found that current students create a network with alumni who are already attending.
The program also organizes a career day, where a number of professionals from various fields speak to students about their career paths. Professions have included medicine, teaching, law, journalism, fashion, and interior design fields.
Financial Aid workshops are conducted as well, and students and parents are assisted in filling out and filing their financial aid applications online. Students are assisted with their scholarship search and applications.
The development of leadership and the spirit of service are also crucial to increasing student motivation and sense of personal worth. Hence, the project places students in roles of responsibility, both with respect to their own educational choices and in their interaction with their communities.
