  • Lab and Placement Exams

The Modem Language (ML) Lab, located in Room B 206, oversees the weekly lab hour that is part of all elementary, intermediate, and heritage language classes. The ML Lab also provides language-tutoring and refresher sessions. In addition, the ML Lab offers Placement/Exemption Exams to students who are already familiar with any of the languages offered by the Modern Language Program.

What can you do in the Modern Language Lab?

    • Tutoring: Individual and small-group tutoring is available on a walk-in basis. Students enrolled in a language class can get help with homework, lab assignments, grammar, vocabulary, culture, presentations and quiz review. Click below to see the weekly Tutoring Schedule for your language. You can also pick up a paper copy of the schedule in room 8206.
    • Placement/Exemption Exams: Students who are proficient speakers of a language other than English can earn three (3) Exemption Credits by taking the Modern Language Placement/Exemption Exam and passing an intermediate/advanced-level modern language or literature class. These credits are Liberal Arts Elective or Unrestricted Elective credits. Also, these credits are often transferable to a four-year college.

    The Lab Hour

Most modern language courses contain a traditional face-to-face lab hour, but with some classes, the lab is online. The lab, whether face-to-face or online, constitutes 10% of the final grade.

Important information about the Placement Test and Exemption Credits

    • Placement exams are given on a walk-in basis during regular ML Lab hours. Students should take the exam when they have two hours in which to do it.
    • There are different levels for the modern languages exemption exam. The exam that you will be given depends on your knowledge in the target language. Please let the proctor know if you feel that the exam given to you is not the correct level (too easy or too difficult).
    • If your major does not require a Liberal Arts Elective or Unrestricted Elective, exemption credits will not count towards your degree. It is possible to apply exemption credits to your degree requirements with approval of the program director, but students should be aware that these credits may not transfer to 4-year institutions and may have to repeat the same or equivalent class there.
    • It is recommended that students take the placement exam at least four (4) weeks before their registration appointment. In order to receive your placement exam results, please see one of the coordinators in B206 in person or call the office at the number listed below.
    • In order to receive the exemption credits, you must take and pass the recommended course.
    • Non-degree students are not eligible to receive exemption credits.
    • The exemption credits will appear on your transcript one semester after you have passed the course.
    • If you change your name, address or telephone number, please inform us of the new phone/address (see below for the contact information).
    • If your major requires Modern Language (e.g., Childhood Education, Secondary Education, Liberal Arts International Studies Option, Spanish-English Translation), the exam will only place you in the appropriate level of the modern language courses. You should consult with your program advisor if you are qualified for Exemption credits or not.
    • If you need further information about our courses or program, please feel free to visit the Modern Language Lab at Room B206 or call (718) 482-5466.
