About

The Theatre program introduces students to skills and knowledge necessary to begin a career in the theatre. Classes lay the foundation for a concrete approach to working in the theatre by exposing students to fully-produced plays, devised theatre, and theatre for social justice. Students gain vital practical skills and insight that prepares them not only to work in theatre but to engage with the world in which we live. Skills learned and applied in theatre productions can be transferred to many other fields. Additionally, through a partnership with the LaGuardia Performing Arts Center (LPAC), students have the opportunity to observe and work with top theatre and entertainment professionals on their theatrical projects.

What makes this major unique?

Students develop production skills through a combination of classroom training and theatre experience. Studying classic and modern plays is part of every students’ program.

Students also gain a foundation in academic theatre. Studies include the ability to analyze, critically assess and write about theatre through rigorous courses in theatre history, dramatic analysis and the contemporary New York theatre scene.

This balanced approach to the AS in Theatre degree provides students with a strong foundation in which to pursue a career in performance or production (acting, design, directing, stage managing, producing) or a scholarly career (critic, dramaturge, historian, teacher, playwright). Even if a student chooses not to pursue a career in theatre, these skills are transferable to many other fields.

Career Possibilities

The Theatre Program at LaGuardia Community College encourages students to transfer to a four-year college upon graduation. While this is not necessary to begin a career in theatre, the program believes that it will foster stronger artists and collaborators. By completing a four-year degree, students will be able to explore and study theatre more deeply. They will gain greater knowledge, and greater experience that will help them begin a career in whichever path of theatre they choose.

The Theatre Program recognizes that many students begin their education with a goal of becoming a professional actor. While this may be possible, the program encourages its majors to also explore some of the many other job opportunities that exist in the world of theatre.

The Theatre Program takes advantage of its location in New York City by providing many opportunities to introduce students to the professional world of theatre through classroom visits by working artists and administrators, theatre tours, internship opportunities, discounted and/or free tickets to performances, etc.
